Nurse Turnover Doubles Since the Pandemic
by Business Wire
Nurse turnover has doubled and roughly 50 percent report feelings of burnout, according to new research from Vizient Inc. and Vaya Workforce. Employment data spanning April 2019 to June 2022 from the Vizient Operational Data Base, which contains data from 650 health care facilities representing over 164,000 nurses, show a 20 percent increase in nurse overtime hours. The ODB also shows overtime doubling during that same period to 8 percent for licensed nursing staff from approximately 4 percent. Many hospitals and health systems continue to rely on contract labor to fill vacancies. Approximately 28,000 travel nurse jobs are currently open versus 8,700 openings on average in 2019, reports Vaya Workforce. Vaya forecasts demand for travel nurses will remain at least 20 percent above pre-pandemic levels through 2023.
