According to the results of the 2024 Main Residency Match recently disclosed by the National Resident Matching Program, the success of international medical graduates (IMGs) in pursuing graduate medical education (GME) in the United States remains strong with substantial increases in the number of doctors obtaining first-year training positions. The research shows that 9,045 IMGs obtained first-year residency positions in accredited U.S. GME programs, a 7.8 percent increase from a year ago. Of the IMGs matched, a total of 3,181 are U.S. citizens, down 175 from 2023. Additionally, the number of matched non-U.S. citizen IMGs is 5,864, an increase of 832 year over year. Finally, the match rates for U.S. citizen and non-U.S. citizen IMGs show a less than one percentage point difference year over year despite record-high applicant participation.
