WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital Taking Lead in Age-Friendly Healthcare

WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital in West Virginia is one of the first U.S. hospitals deploying age-friendly healthcare. The implementation is driven by the accelerating Age-Friendly Health Systems movement that includes four critical components, or 4Ms: What Matters, bringing care into alignment with each older adult's health outcome goals and care preferences; Medication, which must be age-friendly without interfering with the three other Ms; Mentation, or the prevention, identification, treatment, and management of dementia, depression, and delirium across settings of care; and Mobility, through which older adults can move safely each day to maintain function. Heidi Porter, hospital vice president of Quality and Regulatory Affairs, remarks, “The Age-Friendly Health Systems' initiative is an important part of our overarching vision to provide every older adult with the best care possible.”
