The AI Will See You Now
by Wall Street Journal
The Institute for Systems Biology's Lee Hood and Nathan Price with personalized medicine solutions developer Thorne HealthTech expect artificial intelligence (AI) will soon replace or transform most healthcare professions. "We are fast approaching a time when 'centaur doctors,' combining the best parts of human intelligence and AI assistance, will be empowered to make bold medical decisions with far fewer unintended consequences," they predict. One example is the MedAware algorithm, which checks patients' medical needs and alerts doctors if they are prescribing the wrong medication. Clinical decision-support systems like Massachusetts General Hospital's DXplain also help personalize test results and highlight abnormal laboratory outcomes. Hood and Price envision AI eventually providing "a selection of proposed decisions explained in terms that physicians can understand, giving them a chance to critically assess the underlying reasoning."
