Telehealth Data Breaches to Worsen as Adoption Skyrockets

With telehealth visits on the rise, there is a push to bolster cybersecurity and privacy safeguards so that protected data stays that way. The exposure of confidential patient data last month at U.K.-based Babylon Health is an example of how these services can backfire in the absence of tight information security. "Over time, breaches will weed out the providers that aren't prioritizing security," warns Ted Wagner, CISO at SAP National Security Services. "Clients will opt for teledoc providers they feel they can trust, and those will be the ones with information protection frameworks." Despite the risks, executives dismiss calls for federal telehealth regulations. "We do not need another layer of bureaucracy," insists Sebastian Seiguer, CEO of the mobile health company emocha, who says existing frameworks are adequate.
