Struggling Steward Health Care Files for Bankruptcy

Steward Health Care recently filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas, raising questions about the role of private equity in healthcare. The Chapter 11 proceedings are not expected to interrupt the system's daily operations. Its medical centers, doctors' offices, and hospitals are indeed still open as it navigates its financial concerns. The provider also confirmed it was finalizing a debtor-in-financing arrangement with Medical Properties Trust to provide it with an initial $75 million in funding and an additional $225 million should Steward meet "certain conditions acceptable to Medical Properties Trust."
