Recovery of Medical Staffing Firms Will Lag Behind Hospitals, Analysts Say

U.S. hospital staffing companies are slowly starting to rebound from the pandemic shutdown, but healthcare professionals expect that recovery will lag behind hospitals. Recovery of such major players as AMN Healthcare, which has the nation's biggest network of qualified clinicians, and ER staffing firm Envision will be hindered as hospitals look to keep their own staffers employed amid a recession. The "pace of recovery will not be linear," S&P Global analysts wrote in a recent note, and it will depend on a mix of service lines and geography. Analysts further expect hospitals to aggressively renegotiate rates and terms with staffing companies in this year's fourth quarter, which could depress margins even more in the long term.
