Pandemic Brings Surprise Challenges for Health Care Staffing Companies

The demand for healthcare workers has been robust during the COVID-19 crisis, which has caused challenges for some staffing firms. HealthTrust Workforce Solutions saw its business hit especially hard during the pandemic's second wave. "That was when the federal and state government stepped in to help provide nurses, which just had a huge impact on the staffing industry," recalls President and CEO Brendan Courtney. Staffing firms supported by government funds were able to shift nurses around to meet demand. "The unfortunate reality for us is that, as the second wave turned into a third wave, impacting more parts of the country, these nurses were able to move from one accelerated pay rate to another," Many nurses began ditching their contracts in favor of better offers, leaving staffing firms with an even greater need and few options to fill it. Courtney anticipates that as the pandemic slows with the arrival of the vaccines, the government-sponsored programs will end and permit some return to market normalcy.
