Over 1 in 5 Skip Health Care Due to Transportation Barriers

In the past year, Urban Institute researchers found that 21 percent of U.S. adults, including approximately 5 percent of non-elderly men and women, without access to public transportation or a vehicle skipped or missed a medical appointment. Transportation difficulties are more common among families with low incomes, people with disabilities, and those in public health programs. Telehealth has improved access to care for some. However, researchers said not everyone has such access, and it is not always an adequate substitute for in-person care. Medicaid coverage for nonemergency medical transportation also varies by state.
