NPDB Requires Multi-Factor Authentication
by NAMSS Staff
The National Practitioner Data Bank (05/21/24)
The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) now requires the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all user accounts. MFA requires something the user knows, such as a password, and something he/she has, like a mobile phone, for this more secure method of authentication. The Department of Health and Human Services' External User Management System (XMS) administers MFA for the NPDB. For those wondering how to enable MFA for their account, go to the Sign In To Your User Account page and choose Sign in with a DBID and User ID. Then, on your Entity Registration Confirmation page, select Link to an MFA service. When you get to the next page, unless you have a PIV card or CAC, choose Sign in with ID.me. If you do have one of those two credentials, select PIV/CAC then follow the instructions to register it. For those who have an ID.me account, sign in and follow the instructions to link it to your NPDB user account. For those who do not have an ID.me account, choose "Create an account" and follow the instructions. After linking your account, MFA will then be used to sign in to one's NPDB user account.
