Mayo Clinic Physician Faces Termination After Publishing Book
by Leader-Telegram
A Mayo Clinic Health System doctor who self-published a book about his experiences working through the pandemic, has been placed on leave pending termination. Dr. Steven Weiss, an internal medicine physician, has practiced at Mayo Clinic's Eau Claire, Wis., campus for more than three decades. He was fired after a meeting of a Mayo Clinic personnel committee and a vote by a Mayo Clinic board of directors. Weiss' employment is set to formally end on Sept. 13. Until then, he'll receive full salary and benefits as long as he does not return to the clinic to see patients during that time. The clinic completed an investigation and found Weiss' book contained "unauthorized use of confidential business information, self-identification as a Mayo employee without appropriate approval, inappropriate use of patient identifiers, and derogatory and unprofessional commentary placing Mayo in a negative light," states the newspaper. Weiss has acknowledged his criticisms of Mayo in the book, but insists he changed patients' identifiers to protect their privacy.
