How Hospitals Are Using AI to Address Workforce Needs

More and more healthcare organizations are dealing with staffing shortages and unfilled job postings by turning to technology. Machine learning models and artificial intelligence (AI) are not only easing the application process, they're also automizing workflow to decrease burnout and offering healthcare executives more time to connect with employees. Approximately 334,000 clinicians, including physicians and physician assistants, exited the labor force last year because of retirement, burnout, and pandemic-related stressors, a recent study by Definitive Healthcare calculates. On average, the research shows, hospitals experienced 27.1 percent nurse turnover versus 18.7 percent in 2020. Meanwhile, the 2022 NSI National Health Care Retention and RN Staffing Report shows that overall hospital staff turnover is at 25.9 percent -- an increase from 19.5 percent.
