How AI Is Changing Medical Imaging to Improve Patient Care
by Time
Medical imaging is evolving from its initial focus of diagnosing medical conditions to playing an integral part in treatment as well, especially in the area of cancer. Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a key role in this evolution. Doctors are beginning to lean on imaging to help them monitor tumors and the spread of cancer cells so that they have a better, faster way of knowing if therapies are working. “In the next five years, we will see functional imaging become part of care,” says Dr. Basak Dogan, associate professor of radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “We don’t see the current standard imaging answering the real clinical questions. But functional techniques will be the answer for patients who want higher precision in their care so they can make better informed decisions.”
