Dominant Eye Surgery Chain LasikPlus Put Profits Over Patient Care, Some Doctors Say
Some of LasikPlus' doctors have alleged in lawsuits and interviews that they felt pressured by corporate management to follow practices that prioritized profit over patient care. LasikPlus provides laser surgery to fix nearsightedness. These doctors say they were expected to perform so many procedures each day that they worried they could not keep up. Additionally, some former LasikPlus surgeons said they felt pressured to approve clients for whom the vision correct procedure might not be suitable, and that LasikPlus discouraged them from recommending surgical alternatives that might have been better for the patient. In an interview, Craig Joffe, CEO of LasikPlus' parent company LCA-Vision Inc., denied the firm pressured any physician to change any medical practices. Joffe described LasikPlus as a confederation, with the firm providing administrative support while each location's doctors managed the medical aspect.
