Doctors and Nurses Already Face Routine Violence and Abuse – Coronavirus Could Make This Worse

Not only do doctors and nurses have to contend with higher risk of contracting the coronavirus, new research indicates that many healthcare staffers in the United Kingdom are facing verbal threats and physical abuse from patients. This includes patients being aggressive and, in some cases, medical staffers being injured. At the same time, there is a recruitment crisis facing nursing in the U.K. and elsewhere that has resulted in not enough nurses on wards to meet demand. Fewer nurses on a ward can result in an increase in patient slips, trips, and falls. Not having enough nurses can also lead to patients waiting longer for, or not receiving, the care they need.
