Artificial Intelligence Used to Predict Hospitalization Outcomes of Geriatric Patients With Dementia
by News-Medical
A recently published study showed how Houston Methodist researchers were able to predict hospitalization outcomes of geriatric patients with dementia on the first or second day of admission using artificial intelligence. They analyzed hospital records of 8,407 geriatric patients with dementia over a decade within Houston Methodist's eight hospitals, identifying risk factors for poor outcomes among subgroups with different categories of dementia. The researchers devised a machine learning model to quickly identify the predictive risk factors and their ranked value for undesirable hospitalization outcomes early in the course of the patients' stays. The model outperformed all other prevalent methods of risk assessment for these multiple types of dementia with 95.6 percent accuracy. Top identified hospitalization outcome risk factors included encephalopathy, pressure ulcers, urinary tract infections, and falls.
