AI Is About to Face a Major Test: Can It Differentiate COVID-19 From Flu?

Researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help doctors differentiate between COVID-19 and the flu and predict which patients likely will need intensive care beds, ventilators, and other equipment that could be in high demand during a COVID-flu "twindemic." Said the University of Michigan's Karandeep Singh, "Imaging-based products are going to have a harder time spreading and being implemented without either integration into the electronic health record or some company licensing the technology out to universities directly." Dascena, a company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, recently received emergency use authorization from the FDA for a tool that uses AI to analyze electronic health records and flag high-risk patients likely to need intubation. Meanwhile, hospitals are building their own systems to predict mortality risk and identify patients in need of careful management post-discharge.
