AI Able to Predict COVID-19 Mortality From Cardiac Ultrasound Measurements
by Imaging Technology
An international cardiac ultrasound study showed that artificial intelligence (AI)-derived heart measurements could forecast COVID-19 mortality on echocardiograms. Hospital mortality rates varied by region, with 11 percent in Asia, 19 percent in Europe, 27 percent in Latin America, and 26 percent in the United States. Meanwhile, left ventricular longitudinal strain, right ventricle free wall strain, age at presentation, lactic dehydrogenase, and previous lung disease were independently associated with mortality, while left ventricle ejection fraction was not. The study was presented at the recent American College of Cardiology 2021 virtual Scientific Session.
