U.S. Physician Burnout Hits Lowest Rate Since COVID-19

After years marked by stress, exhaustion, and unprecedented pressure, physicians appear to be breathing a little more easily. Physician burnout rates have dropped below 45%, reaching the lowest level since before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to exclusive survey data from the American Medical Association (AMA). Between 2023 and last year, doctors' job satisfaction increased to 76.5% from 72.1%. This is also up from 68% in 2022, AMA researchers note. Yet even amid these hopeful trends, healthcare leaders caution against declaring victory prematurely. Systemic challenges remain, underscoring the need for continued change. Evidence of progress include Atlantic Health System integrating a systemwide well-being strategy and the Hattiesburg Clinic in Mississippi embracing data to build on previous well-being success.
