The Job Task Analysis Process for the CPCS® and CPMSM® Exams
By Amanda Meekins, MHA, CPMSM, CPCS
The Certification Commission of NAMSS (CCN) facilitates the creation and evaluation of the NAMSS certification exams. The first step in creating a certification exam directly and specifically related to medical staff services is a thorough job task analysis (JTA). Following the initial JTA, each exam is updated with a fresh look at the JTA every five to seven years, or earlier if needed, under the coordination of the CCN. This review includes a panel of subject matter experts (SME) from a variety of work settings across the country and in various stages of their careers to fully define the roles of the profession and keep up with industry changes.
The JTA is a methodical approach with the SME panel and working under the guidance of an expert through the CCN’s testing vendor. Over the course of several meetings, this diverse group breaks down the various jobs associated with each exam into their essential components, such as tasks, duties, and responsibilities. The SME panel then defines performance domains and determines the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required to effectively perform the tasks associated with a specific exam. These job responsibilities are prioritized by importance and regularity based on the minimum eligibility criteria outlined in the Candidate Handbook.
Following the finalization of SME panel work, the JTA data is compiled into a preliminary content survey outline to be sent to a larger population of medical services professionals to be further validated. The final result is the examination blueprint, a roadmap for constructing the specific exam under evaluation.
The JTA process is a powerful step in the test development process that has empowered the CCN to optimize the NAMSS certifications and foster a culture of continuous exam improvement. This process guarantees the continued relevancy of each certification as the medical services profession and accrediting bodies evolve over time.
