San Diego State University (SDSU) has introduced four new Doctor of Nursing Practice programs to expand the pipeline of advanced practice nurses at a time of critical need. The programs prepare nurses to lead in such fields as adult-gerontology primary care and family practice, while a post-master's option offers additional expertise. Leaders say the new tracks arrive as California faces a projected shortage of 44,500 nurses by 2030, driven by an aging population and rising demand for primary and mental health care. Faculty note that the curriculum emphasizes evidence-based practice, policy, and systems leadership, giving graduates tools to improve outcomes in clinical and community settings. For senior living communities, the launch is significant: more seniors are expected to require specialized care for multiple chronic conditions, and programs like these help ensure a workforce prepared to deliver quality, person-centered care.
