Quantifying the Pressures: Study Reveals Infection Preventionists' Expanding Workloads

In a recent study, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, Dartmouth Health, and Case Western Reserve University’s School of Nursing found that infection preventionists (IPs) in acute care facilities must contend with expanding workloads and shifting expectations as their resources are stretched thin. Their survey found that no two infection prevention programs are the same, which emphasizes the vulnerability and adaptability of the IP workforce. The researchers said some programs have sufficient resources, but others are understaffed or rely on professionals wearing multiple hats. They stressed that IPs are necessary for health systems to achieve quality and safety goals, and that C-suite executives and clinical leaders need to understand IP workload and resource needs to make more informed decisions about staffing, program design, and cross-departmental collaboration.
