NAMSS Hosts 11th Annual Industry Roundtable to Discuss Peer Review Best Practices

In early September, NAMSS hosted its 11th annual industry roundtable to discuss best practices to inform clinical peer review standards. The NAMSS 2025 Roundtable discussion, “Clinical Peer Review: Establishing Best-Practice Standards for Optimal Results,” included insight from the following organizations:

- American Medical Association (AMA)
- American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM)
- Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
- Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB)
- GI Alliance
- Health Resources and Services Administration/National Practitioner Data Bank (HRSA/NPDB)
- National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ)
- National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)
- The Joint Commission (TJC)
- Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC)
The NAMSS 2025 Roundtable featured a moderated panel discussion that included the chief medical officer, legal counsel, and medical services professional perspectives on clinical peer review and its future as a tool in improving performance, well-being, and outcomes. Through the panel and general roundtable discussions, participants noted the challenges and shortfalls of peer review, as well as the learning and growth opportunities that a well-constructed peer review program enables.
The Roundtable moderator, NAMSS Clinical Quality Liaison and Past President Kate Conklin, presented a framework of peer review best practices that the NAMSS quality team developed to inform best practice standards that envision the peer review of the future. In walking through this framework, the NAMSS quality team sought feedback, consensus, and insight on where peer review is now and where the industry envisions peer review of the future.
