Bill Would Allow AI to Prescribe Drugs

Medical providers are pushing back on a proposal circulating in the U.S. House of Representatives to qualify artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies as prescribers of medication. Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), the bill's sponsor, has hailed AI as central to a "new medical landscape" characterized by improved diagnostics and more efficient front- and back-office operations, for example. While doctors recognize the growing role and potential of AI in health care, they warn the legislation goes too far, too fast. "To be honest," comments Dr. Stephan Fihn, executive deputy director of JAMA Network Open, "properly developed, properly tested, properly managed and highly regulated, it could be a good thing. But this has to be proven and shown." As currently written, the measure lacks detail about which drugs might be subject to AI prescribing, applicable settings and the role of physician review.
