Late last month, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) hospital in Wichita was in the process of firing Christel O. Wambi-Kiesse, a doctor who Missouri regulators charge botched operations while he was in private practice in the Kansas City area in 2013. The VA launched its investigation back in September after The Kansas City Star reported that Missouri's Board of Registration for the Healing Arts was seeking to discipline the urologist for allegedly harming patients while performing robot-assisted surgeries that were beyond his abilities. The board cited three examples while he was on staff at a now-defunct urology clinic associated with Centerpoint Medical Center. According to the complaint, one female patient died from an infection two months after Wambi-Kiesse punctured her bladder while performing a biopsy, then failed to repair the damage. Two senior male patients allegedly suffered dangerous complications after undergoing prostate surgeries that took three times longer than they should have.
