Chinese Hospitals Deploy AI to Help Diagnose COVID-19

Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in Wuhan, China, has emerged as a test bed for how quickly a modern medical center can adapt to a new infectious disease epidemic. One experiment currently underway is in Zhongnan’s radiology department, where staffers are using artificial intelligence (AI) software to detect visual signs of the pneumonia associated with coronavirus on images from lung CT scans. Haibo Xu, chair of radiology at Zhongnan Hospital, says the software helps overworked employees screen patients and prioritize those most likely to have the virus for further examination and testing. The software now in use at Zhongnan was developed by Infervision, a Beijing startup that says its tool has been deployed at 34 hospitals in China and used to review over 32,000 cases.
